Van Winkle Construction has received a 2013 Build Georgia Award from the Associated General Contractors of Georgia, Inc. for work on Morris Hall for Whitefield Academy. The award ceremony was part of the AGCs Annual Conference held in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina June 9 – 12, 2013. The Build Georgia Award recognizes quality in construction by contractors. This is the eighth Build Georgia Award Van Winkle has won.
Van Winkle Construction Vice President Greg Kerr, who served as Senior Project Manager on the Whitefield project, attended the conference on behalf of the company and accepted the award. “We are humbled by this honor. We faced several challenges in this project, but our client was tremendous to work with and we were able to deliver a great new resource that will enable Whitefield Academy to enrich the lives of their students for years to come.”, Kerr stated.
Morris Hall is a 55,000 sq. ft. facility which serves as the academy’s new upper school building and houses Classrooms; Science Labs; Offices; and a 443-seat Black Box Theater. The building is constructed of structural steel frame, stone exterior with plank siding and a standing seam metal roof.
Challenges Van Winkle faced in the course of pre-construction and construction of the project included site conditions, design requirements and budget issues. The company overcame all obstacles by teaming closely with the owner, architect, engineers, and subcontractors.
The architect of record was Perkins + Will of Atlanta, GA. The program manager group of Richmond Sterling of Atlanta, GA. acted as the owner’s representative for Whitefield Academy.
