DESCRIPTION
Fernbank Museum of Natural History chose Van Winkle to create the Wildwoods interactive outdoor experiences integrated into the 65 acre Fernbank Forest.
The historic and scientific importance of the surrounding forest required careful onsite preservation efforts. The project incorporated the existing trees and incorporated supports and protection for them during construction.
FEATURES
In the Treetops
The Wildwoods outdoor expansion offers extraordinary landscapes across a five-story change in elevation—from dramatic vantage points high in the trees to ten acres of footpaths winding through rugged terrain. The new paths include artful tree pods, imaginative play areas, immersive ground trails, and “floating” walkways.
On the Forest Floor
On the ground level, Wildwoods entertains younger visitors with unique sensory stations, elevated adventure nets, hands-on water cycle activities, and a restored wetland.
