Specialty Construction for Unique and Complex Projects

What Counts as Specialty Construction
Specialty construction is what we call a project that doesn't fit neatly into commercial, industrial, or one of our other market categories: a historic renovation, a museum build-out, a civic building, or a structure with requirements that standard commercial work doesn't cover. These projects tend to arrive with their own review boards, their own approval timelines, and their own definition of what counts as finished.
Historic Renovation and Restoration
Restoring a historic building means working within preservation guidelines, matching original materials and details, and often uncovering conditions no drawing predicted. We built the facade for the Gone with the Wind theater premiere in a single day back in 1939 and have restored buildings that have stood for a century since, so the unpredictability that comes with older structures isn't new to us.
Museum, Cultural, and Civic Work
Projects like the Riverdale library, which won an AIA/ALA Library Building Award, and the Fernbank Museum's Wildwoods project called for construction that served the public and met exacting design standards at the same time. That combination, public access alongside a design brief with little room for compromise, is where specialty work tends to live.
Where We Take On Specialty Projects
We take on specialty and complex projects across Metro Atlanta and the broader Southeast, generally on a case-by-case basis, given how much these projects vary from one to the next, and how much a single site's history, a prior renovation, an old easement, an unrecorded addition, can change the plan once we're actually inside the walls.

Projects That Ask For Something Different
Specialty construction with our team covers projects that don't fit a standard commercial or industrial scope, from historic renovations to museum and civic buildings. These builds call for patience with existing structures, tight coordination with review boards, and more precautions than typical jobs usually call for.

Answers to Common Specialty Build Questions
What specialty construction services does Van Winkle Construction provide?
We take on historic renovation and restoration, museum and cultural facility construction, and civic building projects, work that doesn't fit neatly into a standard commercial or industrial category.
What types of unique or complex projects fall under specialty construction?
Historic buildings, museums, libraries, and civic facilities are the most common. Each comes with its own constraints, whether that's a protected facade, a review board, or a public use that raises the stakes.
How does a Contractor approach historic building renovation and restoration?
It starts with understanding what has to be preserved before a single wall comes down. We work closely with Architects and, where required, historic review boards to protect what makes the structure worth saving.
What experience does Van Winkle have with museum, cultural, or civic projects?
Our portfolio includes the Fernbank Museum's Wildwoods project and the Riverdale/Lee B. Philmon Branch Library, which won an AIA/ALA Library Building Award and an AIA Georgia Design Award.
What makes a construction project "specialty" versus standard commercial construction?
A specialty project usually carries constraints beyond typical commercial work: historic preservation requirements, a cultural or civic purpose, or a design that doesn't follow a standard building type.
What areas do you provide specialty construction services in?
We provide specialty construction throughout Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Florida, the same seven states we're licensed in for our other work.
